Big Decision Continues To Pay Off As Vance Makes Career Step At Rolex 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2014) - James Vance was a young man at a crossroads - both in his career and life - in 2012 as he finished his second year of college.

Vance decided in 2011 to focus on business and economics studies at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, after winning races and championships in regional, national and international karting events from 2005-11. He also had moved into racing cars by competing in the Formula Ford open-wheel series in 2009 before following the path of most teenagers and enjoying college life.

But the passion for competition never cooled for Toronto-area resident Vance. Thoughts of the sound, the sight and the fury of being in a race car still bounced around his head.

So Vance sat down with his father, Nigel, and asked if he could take a break from school to pursue his true vocation - becoming a professional race driver.

"He said: 'You know what? You have a year. That's it," Vance said of his father's orders. "I said, 'OK, done.' From that point forward, I knew my timeline. I knew I had a year to make things work, or I was going back to university.

"Once I made that decision to leave university, it's a life-or-death decision. It becomes do or die. You will do anything to make it work."
