James Vance Press Releases

Lessons Learned at Laguna Seca

STOUFFVILLE, Ontario (May 6, 2014)- James Vance drove his Compass360 Racing No. 74 Honda Civic Si from 22nd to second in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race May 3 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca before the team finished 21st due to an on-track incident.

Pushing himself through the field has become a signature move for Vance. After taking his first stab at qualifying during the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix Powered by Mazda weekend, Vance started 22nd in the ST class, farther back than hoped for his first round with his new team.

But Vance gained position through his 90-minute stint even after receiving contact from surrounding competitors. Throughout the race, Vance found himself dodging mayhem on track as multiple incidents and yellow flags plagued the race.

Vance kept the car clean and brought it to the pits for teammate Jon Miller's stint. The mayhem caught up with Miller, as he was hit in Turn 9 and knocked to the rear of the field before finishing 21st.

"My stint was all a struggle," Vance said. "From probably Lap 5 onward to the first yellow, I developed a bad push on the car and managing that for myself was pretty cool. Jon Miller did a great job, had a little bad luck in the end. The whole team did a great job this weekend. I can't say enough about them. A really, really, truly great job, and I enjoyed myself.

"The car wasn't quite as strong as I think we would have liked it to be. It wasn't easy, by any means. But we had a solid stint. Our strategy wasn't quite up to par, either, but I think for the first time for the No. 74 car to finish the race on the lead lap is definitely a positive to take from this. And it was also a first. There were a lot of firsts for me and for my teammate, like getting used to each other.

"It's the worst track for the Hondas. I think coming into it, I should have found more time to get in the front-wheel-drive car beforehand, rather than jumping into the race weekend and going for it. Now it's all taken care of, and I think the next race we will be better off and hit the ground running."

The next stop for Vance and the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge is an event May 23-24 at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut.

VANCE READY FOR FRESH START AT MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA

STOUFFVILLE, Ontario (April 29, 2014)James Vance has faced plenty of challenges after just two races of his rookie season in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.

But the fresh coastal air of the Monterey Peninsula that surrounds Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is symbolic of the fresh start he'll receive for Round 3 as he begins his tenure with Compass360 Racing.

In his rookie season, Vance competed at Daytona and Sebring - almost polar opposite tracks - for the first time in his career, in a Porsche. He now will share the the No. 74 Honda Civic Si fielded by C360R with teammate Jon Miller in the Sport Tuner (ST) class. Vance hasn't even tested the car.

But Vance has one advantage at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca - circuit knowledge. He competed at the picturesque circuit in a Mazda MX-5.

"Mazda Raceway was where I participated in my first pro event," Vance said. "So I hold this track close to my heart. I know this sounds weird, but I love anti-clockwise tracks. I love the flow of the track and the intricacies of the track, too. The subtle off-camber corners can catch you out, but those technical parts of the track are what makes it so great."

The 11-turn, 2.238-mile circuit will be the first track in Vance's racing career where he races a car that is not rear-wheel drive. But the benefits of the new team outweigh the challenge of learning the nuances of his front-wheel drive Honda Civic Si.

"I am extremely excited to be joining C360," Vance said. "They have such experience and so many great people within the team. It's going to be amazing to work with them. The biggest adjustment is going to be getting used to the front-wheel-drive system in my Honda Civic Si."

Vance will get on track for the first time in his new ride at 9:35 a.m. local time Friday, May 2 with the first of two practice sessions.

"To be honest, I haven't had much of a chance to prepare," Vance said. "Other than my fitness regimen and the odd simulator session, I have had little time to practice between my trips to Texas to visit potential sponsors. I'll get in a few more simulator sessions before I head out west. It should make for an interesting first few practice laps."

Qualifying will begin at 4:10 p.m. Friday. The two-hour, 30-minute race starts at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, May 3.

SPONSOR TIES HELP VANCE'S FATHER WIN RACE FOR MORE RACING BUSINESS

STOUFFVILLE, Ontario (April 9, 2014) - Nigel Vance-Lousada often marveled at the elaborate, polished setups in team garages and the paddock while watching Formula One races.

Vance-Lousada didn't forget those memories as he started to follow and support the racing career of his son, James Vance. Instead, he found and capitalized on a market ripe for business within North American motorsport for the same high-quality pit and garage layouts used by F1 teams - but at much more affordable costs.

ExpoSystems USA provides pit and garage solutions that give race teams a world-class look when working away from their race shops. The company's products create sleek, modern, customizable presentations that aid in creating a layout that promotes sponsors and team brands.

The company also has been a leader for more than 40 years in producing modular displays and trade show products, creating a one-stop shop for businesses involved in racing.

"Once I set up our state-of-the-art printing division, I decided that this was something we could offer to teams at a much more competitive rate than they were getting from other companies in Europe," Vance-Lousada said. "We also provided the added bonus that teams got a North American product and didn't have to pay huge shipping fees to get the pit garage solutions provided by ExpoSystems."

Vance-Lousada also has expanded his business through continued sponsorship of his son's racing career. ExpoSystems USA is found on James Vance's No. 74 Honda Civic Si fielded by Compass360 Racing in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and throughout the IMSA paddock this year. Working with his son as a sponsor has given Vance-Lousada a chance to form relationships and work with many race teams.

"Being James' sponsor has been a really gratifying experience for me," Vance-Lousada said. "Watching him all the way through karting, MX-5 Cup and now the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. He is a very unique individual, very quick and a good all-around package. He has afforded me the opportunity to close a good amount of business. He also taught me the value of relationships with the people I have met while being involved with his racing."

Vance has grown up watching his father develop the business. Now he plays an instrumental role in the production and design of the Garage Solutions products created by his father's company.

"My dad has been helping me through racing since I have started," Vance said. "It's at the point now we have a product that can fit perfectly into the motorsports industry, so I want to try and get as much exposure possible for this awesome line of products. The product line itself is hard to come by anywhere else in North America. Most teams that want the garage enclosures more times than not have to go to Europe, so taking that massive step away, as well as the cost, for the North American teams, is a huge step we are hoping will help get the name out there."

Vance will continue to help his father with business development as he strives for a Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge championship during his rookie season. Vance's next race is Saturday, May 3 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.

Vance Signs With Compass360 Racing In Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge

STOUFFVILLE, Ontario (April 3, 2014) -James Vance will join forces with Compass360 Racing to continue his rookie season in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge in 2014.

Vance, 21, joins the team immediately, with their first race together May 2-3 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. Vance and teammate Jon Miller will share the No. 74 Honda Civic Si fielded by C360R in the Sport Tuner (ST) class.

Toronto-based C360R offered Vance the dual advantages of a championship-winning team located near his Ontario home. C360R has won series championships in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010, the World Challenge Touring Car series in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and the Canadian Touring Car Championship in 2010.

"I am extremely excited to get to work at Laguna Seca," Vance said. "Especially as I have been quick each time I have been there in the past. Signing with C360R and being able to work with such an experienced team with a winning pedigree is definitely an honor.

"With my hometown being Toronto, it comes hand in hand as C360R is also based out of Toronto. I am looking forward to getting to work with my teammate Jon Miller, and I am anticipating a successful season with this amazing team!"

Vance competed in the ST class in the first two races of the season, in January at Daytona International Speedway and in March at Sebring International Raceway.

"After the first two rounds being a bit of a roller coaster for me, as well as Jon, I think it is going to be imperative for us to just finish races and consistently score points for this long championship road," Vance said.

C360R Team Principal Karl Thomson is thrilled to welcome the talented Vance to his team and is confident the tandem of Vance and Miller will be successful.

"James impressed us with his performances in the first two races of this Continental Tire season," Thomson said. "We feel he'll make an excellent partner to Jon Miller in our No. 74 Honda Civic Si. As an added bonus, he's based in Toronto, not far from our shop, so I expect he'll be able to work very closely with our crew over the coming season."

Vance also will bring his sponsors, Bionic Environments Inc. of North America and ExpoSystems USA, to C360R and its No. 74 Honda Civic Si. The continued support of those sponsors has enabled Vance to make a seamless transition to the new team.
